Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany visits Stahlwerk Thüringen

On Monday, 20 February 2023, Mr Carsten Schneider, Member of the Bundestag (Social Democratic Party of Germany - SPD) for the city of Erfurt and the regions Weimar and Weimarer Land II and Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor and Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany, visited Stahlwerk Thüringen.

He was accompanied by Mr Bernhard Schanze, Head of Finance and Central Services at the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt District Office.

The tour of our production areas was followed by a constructive exchange of views and ideas with our management and representatives of the works council.

The talks focussed on the necessary framework conditions to secure the steel production location in Unterwellenborn, which result from the EU Green Deal and the transformation towards CO2 neutral steel products.

This background applies in particular to requirements in terms of local availability of renewable energies and hydrogen, the handling of strategic raw materials such as scrap in the EU, the prioritisation of climate-neutral rail transport through network expansion and the creation of a local loading infrastructure for the “rolling road", as well as the greater use of steel by-products to substitute natural resources.

We have appreciated the visit and we are looking forward to remain in contact.
